Is it just me, or does the holiday season seem to arrive a little faster every year?
One minute we're enjoying the fall colours around Peterborough, and the next we're pulling out Christmas decorations, planning get-togethers, and wondering how December is already around the corner.
I love this time of year. The slower evenings, twinkling lights, cozy homes, and extra reasons to get together with family and friends.
But between decorating, shopping, cooking, and getting the house ready for guests, it can also feel like a LOT.
And here's something I've learned: the secret to enjoying the holidays isn't doing more. It's making a few things easier before the busy season begins.
So, whether you're hosting Christmas dinner, welcoming overnight guests, or simply looking forward to a quiet season at home, I've rounded up some of my favourite ways to prepare your home for the holidays without losing the joy of the season.
1. Start With a Little Holiday Home Reset
Before bringing out the decorations, give yourself a head start by tackling the areas of your home that get the most use during the holidays.
And no, I'm not suggesting you deep-clean every closet in the house.
Focus on the spaces that will actually make your life easier.
A few things worth doing:
-
Clear out the entryway to make room for winter coats, boots, and visitors.
-
Declutter kitchen counters before the holiday cooking begins.
-
Make space in the fridge and freezer for extra groceries and leftovers.
-
Freshen up the guest bathroom and stock it with essentials.
-
Check that you have enough clean towels, bedding, and serving dishes.
My favourite approach? Choose one area each evening rather than spending an entire weekend cleaning.
A little preparation now can make the weeks ahead feel so much more manageable.
2. Create a Cozy Home Without Overcomplicating the Decorating
I love a beautifully decorated home.
But after spending years walking through homes and studying interior design, I've learned that creating a warm, inviting atmosphere doesn't have to mean filling every available surface with decorations.
Sometimes, the simplest details make the biggest difference.
Layer in Warmth
Think soft throws, textured pillows, warm lighting, and a little seasonal greenery.
Instead of decorating every room, focus on the spaces where you spend the most time.
A cozy living room, a welcoming entryway, and a few festive touches in the kitchen can go a long way.
Keep Your Decorations Personal
One of my favourite things about holiday decorating is seeing how different everyone's homes look.
Some people love a perfectly coordinated Christmas tree. Others have ornaments collected from family vacations, childhood memories, and years of celebrations.
Personally, I think those meaningful details are what make a home feel special.
Your home doesn't need to look like a magazine.
It should feel like yours.
Don't Forget Holiday Safety
Before plugging in those twinkling lights, inspect the cords and replace anything damaged.
Keep candles and decorations away from heat sources, avoid overloading electrical outlets, and make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working.
If you have a real Christmas tree, keep it watered and away from fireplaces, heaters, and other sources of heat.
Beautiful is wonderful. Safe is even better.
3. Make Holiday Hosting Easier Before Anyone Arrives
If there's one thing my years working in hospitality taught me, it's that good hosting doesn't have to be complicated.
It's really about making people feel welcome.
And the more you can prepare ahead of time, the more you get to enjoy your company.
Create a Cozy Drink Station
This might be one of my favourite little holiday hosting tricks.
Set out a tray with mugs, hot chocolate, tea, coffee, and a few festive extras like cinnamon sticks or marshmallows.
Guests can help themselves, and you won't spend the entire evening running back and forth to the kitchen.
Bonus points if there's something homemade to go with it!
Prepare a Few Things in Advance
Take a little pressure off yourself by preparing appetizers, baked treats, or freezer-friendly meals ahead of time.
And if you're hosting dinner, don't be afraid to ask people to bring something.
A beautiful holiday gathering doesn't require one person to do everything.
A quick food safety reminder: keep perishable foods properly chilled, and don't leave them sitting at room temperature for more than two hours.
Get Your Guest Spaces Ready
If you're expecting overnight visitors, make things easy for everyone.
Fresh bedding, extra blankets, accessible towels, and a few toiletries in a basket are thoughtful little touches.
You don't need an elaborate guest suite to make someone feel welcome.
Sometimes it's the smallest details people appreciate most.
4. Give Your Home a Winter Checkup
Living in Peterborough and the Kawarthas, we know winter weather can show up before we're quite ready for it.
And while holiday decorating is definitely more exciting than home maintenance, a little preparation can help avoid some unwanted surprises.
Before the temperature really drops, take a few minutes to:
-
Disconnect garden hoses and shut off and drain exterior taps.
-
Check that your furnace is working properly and replace the filter if needed.
-
Make sure gutters and downspouts are draining properly.
-
Keep snow shovels, sand, or ice melt somewhere accessible.
-
Tune up the snow blower and make sure you have gas for it.
-
Check that exterior vents are clear of leaves, debris, and snow.
-
Know where your home's main water shutoff valve is located.
If you're heading away over the holidays, arrange for someone to check on the house and make sure your heating is maintained. It's also worth reviewing your home insurance requirements before travelling.
These aren't exactly the glamorous parts of homeownership, I know.
But I'd much rather spend a December evening watching a Christmas movie than dealing with a frozen pipe.
5. Make Time to Enjoy Christmas in Peterborough
One thing I really love about living in Peterborough is how much our local businesses add to the holiday season.
A morning spent wandering downtown, popping into little shops, grabbing a coffee, and picking up a few gifts is so much more enjoyable to me than rushing through a shopping list.
And we have some wonderful places to explore.
Maybe it's breakfast at East City Coffee Shop followed by a visit to Living Local, a stop at Sweet Fern Floral Studio on Charlotte Street, or coffee at Silver Bean at the Canadian Canoe Museum.
You could also make a night of it with dinner at Agave or Bar Vita or One Eighty, or check out one of the holiday markets and community events happening around Peterborough and the Kawarthas.
Turn Your To-Do List Into Something Fun
Instead of treating every holiday errand like another task, try turning a few of them into little outings.
Invite a friend to come Christmas shopping. Meet someone for coffee. Pick up dessert from a local bakery instead of making everything yourself.
And if you're looking for festive events, the Peterborough Tourism holiday guide is a great place to start.
Supporting local businesses is important, but it's also a wonderful excuse to spend a little more time enjoying the community we call home.
6. Leave a Little Room for the Unexpected
I think this might be the most important tip of all.
Don't fill every weekend and evening with plans.
I know, easier said than done.
But sometimes the best holiday memories are the ones you didn't schedule.
A friend stopping by for coffee. An impromptu dinner. An evening spent watching Christmas movies with your favourite people.
Give yourself permission to keep a few evenings free.
And remember, if the house isn't perfectly decorated, the cookies came from a bakery, or dinner is takeout, that's okay.
The people who love you aren't coming over to inspect your baseboards.
They're coming to spend time with you.
And that's what makes this season so special.
Your Quick Holiday Home Preparation Checklist
If you're not sure where to start, here's a little checklist you can work through before the December rush.
Declutter your entryway and main living areas
Check holiday lights and test smoke and CO2 alarms
Prepare a hot chocolate or coffee station
Stock your freezer with a few easy meals
Refresh the guest bathroom and bedding
Check winter home maintenance essentials
Make time for a little local Christmas shopping
Leave at least one evening free to do absolutely nothing
You don't need to tackle everything at once.
A few small things each week can make a big difference.
Frequently Asked Questions About Preparing Your Home for the Holidays
When should I start preparing my home for Christmas?
November is a great time to start.
Focus on practical tasks first, like decluttering, checking winter maintenance, organizing hosting essentials, and planning any larger gatherings.
That leaves more time in December for decorating, celebrating, and enjoying the season.
How can I make my home feel cozy for the holidays without spending a lot?
Start with what you already have.
Rearrange your favourite decor, add a soft throw or two, use warm lighting, and bring in a few seasonal touches.
You don't need entirely new decorations every year to create a beautiful holiday atmosphere.
What winter home maintenance should Ontario homeowners do before Christmas?
Check your heating system, protect outdoor plumbing, clear drainage areas, prepare for snow and ice, and test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
If you're travelling, take additional precautions to protect your home while you're away.
Home Is Where the Holiday Memories Happen
After nearly a decade working in real estate, and a lifetime living here in Peterborough, one thing has become very clear to me.
A home is so much more than its square footage, finishes, or how beautifully it's decorated.
It's the people who gather around the table. The familiar traditions. The unexpected visits. The little moments that eventually become favourite memories.
So, as we head into another holiday season, I hope you find a little time to slow down, enjoy your home, support the wonderful businesses in our community, and spend time with the people who make life special.
And if your holiday conversations happen to include plans for a new home, a move, or a fresh start in the year ahead, I'm always happy to chat.
No pressure. Coffee is always a good place to start.
