Sometimes you don’t have to go very far to feel like you’ve gotten away.
One of the things I love most about living in Peterborough and the Kawarthas is realizing there are still places close to home I haven’t really discovered yet.
This summer, Catchacoma Lake was one of them.
The roads get quieter. The trees get taller. Rocky shoreline replaces sidewalks. And somehow, summer seems to move a little slower.
It’s the kind of place that reminds you why people travel hours to experience cottage country — and how lucky we are to have so much of it right here.
Where is Catchacoma Lake?
Catchacoma Lake is located in Peterborough County, in the Municipality of Trent Lakes, in the Kawartha Highlands area of Ontario.
It’s close enough to Peterborough to make getting there feel easy, but once you arrive, it feels distinctly removed from the pace of everyday life.
Mornings by the water. Long days outside. Dinner without much of a schedule. The kind of afternoon where you suddenly realize you haven’t looked at your phone in a while.
That was probably what surprised me most: how quickly somewhere relatively close to home could feel like such a getaway.
Catchacoma Lake is part of a connected chain of lakes
Here’s something you might not know.
Catchacoma isn’t an isolated lake. Navigable waterways connect it with Beaver, Cavendish, Gold and Mississagua Lakes, creating a much larger interconnected lake system.
I love that.
What looks like a collection of individual lakes on a map is actually this beautiful connected pocket of Kawartha cottage country. It also means there is much more to the area than you might realize from simply looking at Catchacoma on its own.
It’s one of those details that makes this part of Ontario so interesting — you can live here for years and still discover something completely new.
What makes Catchacoma Lake special?
For me, it wasn’t about a checklist of things to see or do.
It was the feeling of the place.
Water. Trees. Rocky shoreline. Long summer days. Nowhere you particularly need to be.
Catchacoma has that unmistakable Canadian cottage-country landscape, and the surrounding Kawartha Highlands make it feel wonderfully removed without requiring a major trip to get there.
There’s something about places like this that naturally changes your pace. You stay outside longer. Plans become a little looser. Your phone becomes a little less interesting.
Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
Exploring Peterborough and the Kawarthas
I spend a lot of time driving throughout Peterborough and the Kawarthas for real estate, and I’m still surprised by how different one community, lake or stretch of road can feel from the next.
That’s one of the things I love about this area.
Another lake. Another small town. Another winding road you’ve probably passed a hundred times without wondering where it goes.
Knowing these communities is an important part of what I do as a local REALTOR®, but Catchacoma reminded me that you don’t always need a reason to explore where you live.
No appointment. No itinerary. No place you need to be next.
Just curiosity.
Sometimes the best discoveries are close to home
We’re always thinking about the next trip, the next weekend away or the next place we want to see.
Meanwhile, some pretty incredible places are sitting almost in our own backyard.
Catchacoma Lake was a good reminder of that for me — and a reminder that there is still so much of Peterborough and the Kawarthas left to discover.
Sometimes you just have to take the turn you haven’t taken before. 🤎
